BRUSSELS — A World Court ruling ordering Israel to halt its military assault on the city of Rafah must be implemented, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Monday, ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting.
Israel is pushing ahead with military action in southern Gaza despite the ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) urging the country to immediately halt its operations, Borrell said.
He also noted that Hamas is not respecting the ruling, as it continues to launch rockets against Israel.
“And then there is the still more important, still more important, ruling of the International Court of Justice, which is the core of international justice. In order to act above the national level, it’s at the core of the United Nations Charter. And here, again, we have to express not only respect, but to ask for the implementation of the decision of the Court. And unhappily, what we have seen in the immediate hours is that Israel continues the military action that has been asked to stop,” he said.
Borrell also emphasized the need to respect the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC), condemning accusations of anti-Semitism by the Israeli government as “completely unacceptable.”
