Activists call for Afghanistan’s UN membership fee to be paid from Afghan Fund, weekly aid

The Purple Saturdays Movement, an activists’ movement from Afghanistan, has called for Afghanistan’s UN membership fee to be paid from the Afghan Fund in Swiss and the weekly $40 million aid given to the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

The movement criticized the suspension of Afghanistan’s voting rights in the UN General Assembly, claiming that despite the current situation, the UN and UNAMA in Afghanistan are paying “ransom” to the Taliban under the guise of humanitarian aid and engagement.

In a statement, the movement said, “The General Assembly, without regard to Article 19 of the UN Charter, has taken away the voting rights of a country that is the sole voice of the Afghan people in the largest global organization.”

This women’s protest movement has called on the UN to continue its support for the “rightful” voice of the Afghan people against the “self-proclaimed and tyrannical Taliban government.”

The Purple Saturdays Movement has urged the UN to defend the rights of the “most oppressed people” in light of the “uncontrollable” current conditions and to reinstate Afghanistan’s voting rights.

The UN suspended Afghanistan’s voting rights in the General Assembly due to non-payment of membership fees.

According to the UN Charter, any member country that fails to pay its membership fees for two consecutive years or more loses its voting rights in the General Assembly.
