Qais Alizada, an Afghan, was defeated in the final round of the Youth Boxing Championships in Astana by his Kazakh opponent, securing Afghanistan the runner-up position in the tournament.
Alizada earned a silver medal for Afghanistan after nearly two decades in this round of the competition.
The match between Alizada and his Kazakh opponent in the 80-kilogram weight class took place last night, Tuesday, April 7, in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Prior to the final, Alizada defeated his Indian rival.
This is Afghanistan’s first silver medal in the youth age group at the Youth Boxing Championships.
It has been 29 years since Afghanistan last won a silver medal in the senior age group at the Asian Boxing Championships.
Additionally, it is reported that Qais Alizada, along with six other Afghan boxers, will travel to Thailand in two weeks to compete in the qualifiers for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
