Afghanistan falls to Ireland by 38 runs in first T20 series match

SHARJAH, UAE — Afghanistan’s cricket team was defeated by Ireland by 38 runs in the opening match of the T20 series in Sharjah, UAE, on Friday night.

Rashid Khan, Afghanistan’s captain, made a significant return after a hiatus due to surgery, capturing three wickets for 19 runs in four overs. Despite his performance, the team faced a setback in their first match.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, Afghanistan saw Khan and Nangialay Khaorte, who took two wickets (details of runs were not provided), put Ireland under pressure. Nevertheless, Ireland’s Harry Tector scored 56 runs off 34 balls, steering his team to a total of 154.

Afghanistan struggled with their batting lineup, losing early wickets. A modest partnership between Ibrahim Zadran and the young Mohammad Ishaq failed to chase down the target. Ireland dismissed Afghanistan for 111 runs in 18.4 overs.

The teams are scheduled to play their second match on March 17 and the third on March 18.
