Rina Amiri, the US Special Representative for Women and Human Rights in Afghanistan, has issued a fervent plea for the immediate release of Julia Parsi, Neda Parwani, and other human rights activists currently detained by the Taliban.
“We call on the Taliban to promptly release Zholia Parsi, Neda Parwani, and others who are subjected to similar injustices,” Amiri asserted as she joined many other voices in their call for the release of the activists.
She further emphasized, “The Taliban cannot assert that the lives of Afghans have improved when half of the population is being silenced, and a climate of fear and repression persists.”
In the meantime, women activists within the country have contended that the Taliban has consistently stifled their calls for justice and has detained and subjected some of them to torture over the past two years.
A significant number of women and girls, deprived of opportunities for employment and education, find it increasingly untenable to continue living under these circumstances.
Neda Parwani, along with her son and husband, was apprehended by the Taliban on Sept. 19, while Julia Parsi was detained on 27 Sept., both in Kabul city.
Women protesters have decried the Taliban’s ongoing use of repression, detention, and torture against female demonstrators and civil activists as part of their strategy to quell women’s voices demanding justice.
