Beijing says China supports Russia in maintaining national stability

China’s foreign ministry on Monday said that Beijing “supports and believes that Russia can maintain its national stability”, when asked if mutiny over the weekend from the Wagner group has weakened Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The Wagner group incident you mentioned is Russia’s internal affairs,” foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said during a regular briefing in Beijing

Mao added that she had “no details to offer” when asked about a phone call between President Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping over the weekend.

Russia sought to restore calm on Monday after a mutiny by the powerful Wagner Group was aborted over the weekend with no apparent penalties for the perpetrators or their leader, while Western allies assessed how President Putin might reassert authority and what it could mean for the war in Ukraine.
