The Taliban-run interior ministry on Wednesday confirmed that four people were killed in clashes over gold mining in the northeastern province of Takhar.
Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesman for the Taliban-run interior ministry, said three local residents and one employee of a mining company were killed in fighting in Chah Ab district. Five others were wounded, he said.
Qani said the Taliban deputy governor for Takhar had travelled to the area to investigate the incident. Mining operations at the site have been suspended while inquiries continue, he added.
He also said two people, including a company employee, had been detained in connection with the violence.
Local sources, however, told Amu TV that the death toll was higher, saying five residents and one company employee were killed and 16 others wounded.
