New recruits in Taliban police in Panjshir province have been asked to procure their own weapons or risk dismissal, four sources from the Taliban police told Amu.
According to the sources, Taliban officials told recruits that only those who could bring personal firearms would be allowed to remain in service.
“We told the Taliban police command that we don’t have weapons,” one of the recruits said. “They replied that if we don’t have any, we should buy them from somewhere else.”
The sources said the order specifically targets local recruits from Panjshir, while Taliban members brought in from other provinces are exempt.
Earlier this year, the Taliban reportedly recruited 481 young men from Panjshir into the police ranks, but around 270 were dismissed within a few months — many of them locals accused of lacking loyalty or proper equipment.
