KABUL — A Malaysian delegation led by Dato Ahmad Azam, the country’s special envoy to Afghanistan, has arrived in Kabul and has held talks with Taliban officials.
Taliban said in a statement that the delegation met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Taliban’s acting foreign minister, to discuss expanding political and economic relations and enhancing bilateral cooperation.
In the meeting, Muttaqi reportedly described the current diplomatic, religious, cultural and economic relations between Afghanistan and Malaysia as growing, and expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s historical support and goodwill toward Afghanistan, the statement said.
“Afghanistan seeks to deepen its ties with Southeast Asian countries, including Malaysia,” the statement quoted him as saying.
According to the statement, the Malaysian delegation, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and described Afghanistan’s situation as improving. The visit, they noted, was carried out on the instructions of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and is intended to lay the groundwork for future high-level engagements.
Dato Ahmad Azam last visited Kabul in December 2022.
