Trump dismisses cease-fire motive for early G7 departure

President Donald Trump has denied that his early departure from the Group of 7 summit in Canada was related to negotiations over a cease-fire between Israel and Iran, contradicting earlier remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Trump, speaking through a post on his Truth Social platform shortly after boarding Air Force One, insisted that his return to Washington was unrelated to ongoing efforts to ease the escalating conflict in the Middle East. “He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington,” Trump wrote, referring to Macron. “But it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that.”

The president did not specify what prompted his sudden departure, offering only a cryptic sign-off: “Stay Tuned!”

At a press conference late Monday, Macron had framed Trump’s exit from the summit as a potentially constructive step. “There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange,” the French leader said. “An offer was made especially to get a ceasefire and to then kick-start broader discussions.”

The remarks came amid growing speculation that backchannel diplomacy was underway to de-escalate the intensifying Israel–Iran confrontation. Earlier in the day, Axios reported that White House officials were considering a potential meeting with Iranian counterparts this week to explore a framework for a renewed nuclear agreement.

The White House has not commented on the Axios report, and it remains unclear whether Trump’s return is connected to any imminent diplomatic initiative.
