TEHRAN — Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will travel to Norway on June 11 and 12 to participate in the 22nd edition of the Oslo Forum, Iranian state media reported.
During the forum, Araghchi is expected to hold a series of bilateral meetings, though the agenda and participants have not been disclosed. Western diplomatic sources, speaking to Amu on condition of anonymity, noted that the Oslo Forum typically convenes in late May or early June and often includes discussions on Afghanistan.
Since its inception in 2003, the forum—organized annually by the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs—has served as a confidential platform where global leaders, mediators, and conflict parties discuss crisis resolution. In recent years, delegates from the Taliban have also attended at a mid-level capacity.
According to the forum’s official description, it “provides a venue for dialogue between opposing parties in conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Philippines.” The meetings are intentionally off the record, creating what organizers describe as “a secure environment for constructive discussion aimed at resolving disputes and advancing peace.”
Public interest in the Oslo Forum’s discussions remains high, particularly regarding Afghanistan. Rights advocates and local activists say they hope that the event will yield renewed international efforts toward inclusive governance—one that respects women’s rights and human rights more broadly.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the Taliban leadership has been formally invited to this year’s forum. The Oslo Forum’s official website has not yet released details regarding its schedule or guest list.
