Taliban foreign minister travels to China ahead of expected talks

The Taliban’s acting foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, on Monday traveled to China, where he is expected to attend talks with the Chinese and Pakistani foreign ministers.

According to a statement from the ministry, the delegation includes Ahmadullah Zahid, Taliban deputy minister of industry and commerce.

Muttaqi is also scheduled to meet with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The visit may include a trilateral meeting involving the foreign ministers of the Taliban, China, and Pakistan, the statement said.

Muttaqi remains on the UN sanctions list. He was provided a travel ban exemption by the UNSC for a trip to China from May 19 to 26.

A senior Taliban official previously told Amu that the three-party talks are expected to take place on Tuesday, though no specific time or agenda has been publicly confirmed.

Separately, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar traveled to China on Monday, accompanied by Mohammad Sadiq, Pakistan’s special envoy for Afghanistan.
