Turkmenistan vows uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Afghanistan

KAZAN — Turkmenistan will continue to deliver humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan without interruption, the country’s top official announced Thursday during the opening of the Kazan Forum, a high-profile economic gathering between Russia and the Islamic world.

Speaking at the plenary session of the 16th annual Russia–Islamic World: Kazan Forum, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, chair of Turkmenistan’s People’s Council and the former president, reaffirmed his country’s longstanding commitment to supporting Afghanistan’s civilian population.

“As a member of the Islamic Organization for Food Security, Turkmenistan supports the defense of the interests of Islamic countries facing shortages of food and other essential goods,” Berdimuhamedov said. “For years, we have sent regular convoys of food, warm clothing, powdered milk, medicine, and hygiene supplies to the people of Afghanistan—and we will undoubtedly continue this mission.”

Berdimuhamedov underscored Turkmenistan’s broader humanitarian agenda, emphasizing that food security remains a critical issue in the Muslim world, particularly amid deepening geopolitical and economic challenges.

“This issue has gained even more importance in the current complex global context,” he noted.

The Kazan Forum, which runs from May 13 to 18 in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, is an annual platform aimed at strengthening economic and political cooperation between Russia and Islamic nations. This year’s forum focuses on the theme: “Digitalization: A New Reality and Expanded Opportunities for Cooperation.”

Delegates from more than 100 countries are expected to attend the event.
