US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv on Thursday morning to hold a meeting with the United States embassy staff.
Blinken will announce $2 billion in new foreign military financing to Ukraine and 18 other countries at risk of future Russian aggression, a senior State Department official said as quoted by Reuters.
The official said the Biden administration was notifying the US Congress of its intent to make the funding available for long-term investments, without specifying the other countries or detailing how much would go to Ukraine.
The conflict in Ukraine that started six months ago has killed thousands and has reduced Ukrainian cities to rubble. Moreover, in recent weeks, fears have grown over a potential disaster at Zaporizhzhia, which is Europe’s biggest nuclear power plant.
Washington has already provided more than $10 billion in military assistance to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s government since Russian troops invaded in February.
