ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — A former Afghan army officer died by suicide early Sunday in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, amid growing hardships faced by Afghan refugees, local sources told Amu TV.
The man, identified as Osman, was originally from the Khwaja Ghar district of Takhar Province in northern Afghanistan. According to sources close to his family, Osman had two wives and four children — one wife remained in Afghanistan while the other lived with him in Pakistan.
Preliminary information indicates that Osman had served with the Herat Army Corps and in central units of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense before the collapse of the previous Afghan government in August 2021.
His death comes as hundreds of former Afghan military personnel who fled to neighboring countries, including Pakistan, face deteriorating conditions, uncertainty, and the threat of deportation following the suspension of U.S. refugee processing under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Family members said Osman had been under severe psychological pressure due to his uncertain future and the lack of prospects for resettlement, ultimately leading him to take his own life.
