Haqqani meets with Kabir amid deepening rifts within Taliban

KABUL — Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s acting interior minister, met with Abdul Kabir, the Taliban’s refugee minister, to discuss the country’s unfolding political and humanitarian challenges, according to a statement from the Taliban-eun Ministry of Refugees.

The statement said the two sides addressed the ongoing deportation of Afghan migrants from Pakistan and emphasized the need for greater coordination between security agencies and the refugee ministry to support returning citizens.

The meeting comes as tensions appear to be mounting within the Taliban’s leadership. Haqqani, a key figure in their military wing, has reportedly clashed with the reclusive supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, over his hardline policies and centralized decision-making.

Sources familiar with internal Taliban discussions told Amu that during a meeting last month in Kandahar, Haqqani warned Akhundzada that his uncompromising governance style risks alienating senior leaders within the Taliban. The Taliban leader was said to be angered by Haqqani’s recent trip to the United Arab Emirates, which occurred during his absence from the Ministry of Interior.

Haqqani has remained largely out of the public eye for nearly two months. Although some Taliban officials helped mediate his return to Afghanistan, the group has not issued a formal statement confirming his reinstatement.

The reported divisions have emerged as the Taliban face increased international scrutiny over their human rights record, internal power dynamics, and deteriorating relations with neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan.
