Ireland A steady at lunch on Day 3 but trail Afghanistan by 432 runs

ABU DHABI — Ireland A resumed their innings on Wednesday morning and batted through the entire first session of Day 3, reaching 180 for 2 at lunch in response to Afghanistan A’s commanding first-innings total of 612.

Trailing by 432 runs, the Irish batters showed resilience against a disciplined Afghan bowling attack. Cade Carmichael anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 70 off 110 balls, while Tom Mayes remained not out on 46 from 118 deliveries. The pair have built a crucial partnership, attempting to stabilize the Irish innings after the early loss of Stephen Doheny, who made 27.

Afghanistan’s bowlers continued to apply pressure but managed only two breakthroughs in 55 overs before the lunch interval. Zia Akbar and Arab Momand picked up one wicket each, conceding 32 and 38 runs respectively.

Afghanistan A’s dominant position was built on a mammoth first-innings performance led by Bahir Shah, who struck 187 off 274 balls. He was supported by Riaz Hassan (94) and Imran Mir (85), with the team declaring at 612 for 7 after 151 overs.

Ireland A will look to continue their resistance in the second session, hoping to reduce the deficit and avoid a follow-on in what remains a steep climb back into the contest.

The four-day match is part of the ongoing series between the Afghanistan Abdalyan and Ireland Wolves, providing a platform for emerging players from both sides to showcase their red-ball credentials.
