KHOST, Afghanistan — Two people were killed and three others injured after lightning struck in two separate incidents in eastern Afghanistan’s Khost Province, two local sources told Amu on Wednesday.

The incidents occurred late Tuesday afternoon — one in the provincial capital of Khost and the other in the Zazi Maidan district, according to the sources.

The deaths bring the total number of fatalities from lightning strikes in Afghanistan this year to at least 12, based on data compiled by Amu. There have been five deadly lightning-related incidents across the country since the start of the current solar year, including three in Khost, one in Paktia, and one in Helmand Province.

The country’s meteorological department, operating under Taliban administration, had earlier issued a weather alert warning of heavy rainfall, snow, and thunderstorms across 19 provinces.

The advisory, released Tuesday, predicted adverse weather in regions including the Salang Pass and the provinces of Badakhshan, Takhar, Nuristan, Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Kabul, Kapisa, Panjshir, Parwan, Baghlan, Kunduz, Balkh, Jawzjan, Sar-e Pol, Bamyan, Maidan Wardak, and Faryab.
