Afghanistan’s Yasin Mirzai wins gold belt at martial arts tournament in Cambodia

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan martial artist Yasin Mirzai claimed the championship title and golden belt at the Dragon martial arts tournament held in Cambodia, after a dominant performance in the traditional Southeast Asian combat sport of Kun Khmer.

Mirzai, who competed under the Afghan flag, defeated opponents from Spain and Cambodia to advance to the final round, where he secured a decisive victory to take home the title.

The 26-year-old now holds a professional record of 26 wins and just two losses.

Kun Khmer, also known as Pradal Serey, is a traditional martial art rooted in Cambodian history and culture. Known for its powerful strikes using fists, elbows, knees and shins, it shares similarities with Thailand’s Muay Thai but is distinguished by its unique techniques and ceremonial traditions. The sport is gaining international recognition, with growing participation in global tournaments.

Mirzai’s victory marks a significant achievement for Afghan combat sports, as Afghan fighters continue to make their mark on international stages despite limited resources and support.
