KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban’s Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that it has reached an agreement with the United Arab Emirates for the release of 54 Afghan citizens currently held in UAE prisons.
In a brief statement, the ministry described the agreement as a reflection of the “goodwill” of the UAE government toward Afghan nationals. The ministry also released a list of the individuals expected to be freed under the arrangement.
Further details regarding the nature of the charges or sentences of those detained were not disclosed, and Emirati authorities have not yet commented publicly on the agreement.
The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by the Taliban to expand diplomatic and consular engagement with regional governments, particularly around issues related to Afghan migrants and detainees abroad.
