Traffic accident in Badakhshan kills three, injures seven

Faizabad, capital of Badakhshan.

KABUL, Afghanistan — A traffic accident in northeastern Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province left three people dead and seven others injured after a vehicle overturned in a remote district, local Taliban officials said Friday.

According to Taliban-run Bakhtar News Agency, the crash occurred in the Dawong village of Shahr-e Bozorg district when a Toyota Land Cruiser veered off the road and flipped over. The cause of the accident has not been publicly disclosed.

Ehsanullah Kamgar, a spokesman for the Taliban police headquarters, said some of the injured are in critical condition and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Badakhshan, one of Afghanistan’s most mountainous and underserved provinces, has long faced challenges related to poor road infrastructure. Local residents have frequently voiced concerns about the lack of paved roads and safe transportation options, particularly in rural districts.

Traffic accidents are common across Afghanistan, where road conditions, vehicle safety standards, and emergency response services remain limited — especially in remote regions.
