Iran completes first 55 kilometers of border wall with Afghanistan

TEHRAN — Iran has completed the first phase of a major border wall project along its northeastern frontier with Afghanistan, constructing 55 kilometers of fencing as part of a broader effort to curb unauthorized crossings, Iranian officials said this week.

According to state media outlet IRNA, Hossein Jamshidi, the commander of Taybad city in eastern Iran, said the project is among Iran’s most “active and strategic” security initiatives. The wall is being constructed by engineers from Iran’s Army Ground Forces and is designed according to modern scientific and engineering standards, he said.

Jamshidi added that to support upcoming phases, Iran has already prepared infrastructure covering an additional 100 kilometers along the border.

“The sealing of the border has significantly reduced the unauthorized entry of Afghan nationals into Iran,” he said, citing monitoring and surveillance data collected during the project.

The broader border-sealing initiative spans 953 kilometers in total, of which over 300 kilometers are currently under construction in Razavi Khorasan province, according to Iranian officials.

The Dogharoun border crossing, a key trade and transit point located 18 kilometers southeast of Taybad and 248 kilometers from Mashhad, lies within the project’s scope.

Iranian authorities have previously cited security concerns — including instability in Afghanistan under Taliban rule — as the primary reason for accelerating the border wall’s construction.
