TEHRAN — An Iranian official has alleged that undocumented migrants in the country are illegally using the identity documents of others, warning that the practice could create future complications.
Fattah Mohammadi, Deputy Political Governor of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad Province, told Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB that both legal and undocumented foreign nationals are present in the region.
In our country, and consequently in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, we are witnessing the presence of both legal and illegal foreign nationals,” Mohammadi said. “These individuals obtain and use the identity documents of citizens, which will cause problems in the future.”
Crackdown on Afghan Migrants
Iranian authorities have repeatedly emphasized their intent to expel Afghan migrants, tightening restrictions on their movement and employment.
In a separate statement, the police commander of Zanjan Province warned against housing, transporting, or employing undocumented migrants.
“Zanjan is among the provinces where the employment of unauthorized foreign nationals is prohibited,” he said, according to ISNA. “If anyone employs them, legal action will be taken against violators.”
He added that transporting undocumented migrants within restricted cities is a punishable offense. Vehicles used for this purpose will be confiscated for six months on the first offense and for one year in case of repeat violations.
The latest warnings come as Iran continues mass deportations of Afghan migrants, a policy that has drawn criticism from human rights organizations.
