KABUL— Roza Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), is set to brief the UN Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan on Monday, March 10, according to a statement from the mission.
The UNAMA statement said Otunbayeva’s address will take place at 11:30 p.m. Kabul time.
The briefing comes amid growing international condemnation of the Taliban’s restrictions on women, which have drawn sharp criticism from human rights activists, governments, and global organizations following International Women’s Day on March 8.
At the same time, some rights activists have previously accused Otunbayeva of legitimizing the Taliban, alleging that UNAMA’s engagement with the group downplays its human rights violations.
