14 Afghan migrants released from prisons in Iraq and Pakistan

KABUL— At least 14 Afghan migrants have been released from prisons in Iraq and Pakistan and have returned home, Taliban officials said.

The Taliban’s Ministry for Refugees and Repatriation said in a statement that two Afghan migrants detained in Iraq were freed after spending three months in prison in Basra. They had been arrested by Iraqi police while attempting to cross illegally from Iran. The two returned to Afghanistan through Iran on Friday, the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Consulate in Karachi, run by the Taliban, announced that 12 Afghan citizens had been released from various detention centers in Sindh Province, Pakistan, and had returned to Afghanistan.

According to Abdul Jabbar Takhari, the Taliban-appointed consul general in Karachi, a total of 64 Afghans, including two women and seven children, have been freed from Sindh province prisons over the past three months. However, he did not clarify why they had been detained.

The released migrants crossed into Afghanistan through the Spin Boldak border, officials said.
