Turkish coast guard rescues 36 Afghan migrants at sea

ISTANBUL — The Turkish coast guard rescued 36 Afghan migrants, including 17 children, from a rubber boat off the coast of Çeşme, İzmir, Turkish media reported.

The migrants, who were attempting to illegally cross into Europe, were intercepted and taken into custody on Monday, according to the reports. After medical examinations, they were transferred to a migrant repatriation center in the city.

Earlier, Turkish police detained 30 Afghan migrants in Sakarya, central Turkey, as part of broader efforts to curb undocumented migration.
