A driver was killed, and two Pakistani soldiers were wounded as clashes between Taliban forces and Pakistani border guards intensified at the Torkham crossing early Monday, March 3, according to Pakistani sources.
The escalation comes after both sides failed to reach an agreement on reopening the key border crossing during talks on Sunday. Security officials in Pakistan’s Khyber district confirmed the injuries and said tensions have continued to rise.
Local sources had earlier reported sporadic exchanges of fire overnight, with heavy weapons used, causing fear among residents. Some projectiles reportedly struck residential areas, damaging homes near the border.
The Torkham crossing has been closed for 10 days, with Pakistani authorities citing Taliban construction of new border outposts as the reason. So far, the Taliban have not commented on the latest clashes.
