Pakistan frees 91 Afghan migrants as deportations continue

KABUL, Afghanistan — 91 Afghan nationals detained in Pakistan have been released and repatriated, the Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees said on Thursday.

According to officials at the Torkham border crossing in Nangarhar province, an additional 10 families, comprising 33 individuals, along with 58 other Afghans detained for lacking legal documentation, were also deported through the border.

The Taliban said that upon arrival, the returnees were registered at the border, provided with humanitarian assistance, and transported to their home provinces.

Pakistan has been carrying out a large-scale expulsion of undocumented Afghan migrants for months, despite widespread criticism from human rights organizations.

Islamabad has defended the policy as necessary for migration management and national security, but Afghan migrants in Pakistan have repeatedly reported mistreatment by police and security forces.
