KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban publicly flogged a woman and three men in Shakardara district of Kabul, accusing them of adultery, unlawful relationships, and fleeing home, according to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court.
Each of the four individuals received between 38 and 39 lashes and was sentenced to six months to 18 months in prison, the statement said. The punishment was carried out in public after being approved by the Taliban’s highest court.
The flogging took place in the courtyard of the Taliban’s district court in Shakardara, in the presence of the district governor, police chief, and local residents.
Taliban have dramatically increased the use of public lashings in recent weeks. Over the past month, the number of flogging cases has tripled compared to the previous month.
According to official Taliban court data, nearly 90 people—including women—have been flogged across multiple provinces in less than a month.
An Amu TV review found that the Taliban conducted five public floggings last month, with women making up the majority of those punished.
