The Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, has called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to assist in determining the fate of Afghan prisoners held abroad, according to a statement from the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry.
Muttaqi made the request during a meeting in Kabul with Pierre Krahenbuhl, the ICRC’s director-general, the ministry said.
The Taliban quoted Krahenbuhl as saying that restrictions on Red Cross access to prisons in some countries have hindered humanitarian efforts to locate Afghan detainees and inform their families of their whereabouts. However, he reportedly assured that the ICRC would increase its efforts on the matter.
The ICRC has not yet commented on the meeting.
