Taliban arrest Panjshir resident in Kabul, sources say

Taliban have detained Shafiqullah Atayi, a resident of Panjshir province, in Kabul for the past eight days without charges, according to sources who spoke to Amu TV.

The sources said Atayi has no political or factional affiliations and was not involved in any political activities.

This is the second time the Taliban have arrested him. Two years ago, he was detained without any known charges and held for four months before being released, the sources added.

Taliban have not commented on his arrest.

Previously, human rights organizations have reported arbitrary detentions of Panjshir residents by the Taliban after they took power in August 2021.

In June 2022, Human Rights Watch reported that Taliban forces detained about 80 residents in Panjshir’s Khenj district, releasing 70 after several days while continuing to hold 10 individuals whose relatives were accused of NRF membership.

Amnesty International, in a June 2023 report, highlighted that the Taliban conducted village-wide arbitrary arrests in Panjshir, detaining as many as 200 people at a time without charge.
