Iran detains 100 Afghan migrants in Sistan and Baluchestan

TEHRAN — Iranian authorities have detained 100 Afghan migrants in the northern part of Sistan and Baluchestan province, a local police official said, as part of an ongoing crackdown on undocumented foreigners.

Mohammad Sheibak, the police commander of Hirmand, said the arrests were carried out under what Iranian authorities call a “social security enhancement plan,” according to the state-run IRNA news agency.

The latest detentions come amid an intensified effort by Iranian authorities to arrest and deport Afghan migrants. Last week, police in Sistan and Baluchestan detained 172 Afghans, adding to the growing number of migrants facing expulsion.

According to a review by Amu of figures from the Taliban-run Bakhtar News Agency, 335 Afghan migrant families returned from Iran to Afghanistan in the past week.

Afghan migrants in Iran have reported mistreatment by local authorities, saying they have faced humiliation, beatings, torture, and verbal abuse by police.
