Pakistan reaffirms support for Afghanistan in counter-narcotics efforts, envoy says

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s special envoy to Afghanistan, Sadiq Khan, said that during a Doha Process Working Group meeting on counternarcotics, he reiterated his country’s commitment to assisting Afghanistan in countering narcotics production and trafficking.

Speaking virtually, Khan said Pakistan remains committed to supporting Afghanistan through preferential trade agreements, transit facilitation for goods, and technical assistance in climate-resilient farming techniques.

He also emphasized Pakistan’s educational and law enforcement support, highlighting 4,500 scholarships for Afghan university students, training programs to build law enforcement capacity in counternarcotics and initiatives to create alternative livelihoods for Afghan nationals.

Khan’s remarks come amid deteriorating relations between Pakistan and the Taliban. Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban of harboring Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, an allegation the Taliban strongly denies.

Taliban have blamed Pakistan for fueling instability in Afghanistan, deepening tensions between the two neighbors.
