Japan pledges $1.65 million to support vulnerable communities in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Yemen

TOKYO — Japan has pledged $1.65 million to support humanitarian projects in Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Yemen, focusing on healthcare and reproductive rights, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) announced.

According to IPPF, the funding will help improve maternal and child healthcare and support vulnerable populations in Logar and Parwan provinces in Afghanistan, which have been heavily impacted by local crises.

The organization said the aid aims to expand access to sexual and reproductive health services, medical care, and information on gender-based violence.

Alvaro Bermejo, Director-General of IPPF, stated that while each of the three countries faces unique challenges, the funding from Japan will be effectively utilized by local member associations to protect lives and improve health outcomes.

“By doing so, we contribute to human security, enabling people to live with dignity, free from disease and fear of violence,” Bermejo said.

IPPF also announced plans to provide healthcare services to 83,595 people and train 222 healthcare providers and peer educators across Afghanistan, Lebanon, and Yemen by February 2026.
