Iranians mark 46th anniversary of Islamic Revolution in Tehran

TEHRAN — Thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran on Monday to commemorate the 46th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the Western-backed monarchy and established the Islamic Republic.

Footage from Iranian state media showed large crowds assembled at Azadi Square, waving Iranian flags and listening to speeches and music.

The 1979 revolution led to the ousting of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, a secular monarch allied with the West, and brought Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, a Shiite cleric, to power as the leader of the newly formed Islamic Republic.
