KABUL — The Salang Pass, a vital route connecting northern Afghanistan to Kabul, was temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall and stormy conditions, according to Taliban officials.
Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, Taliban spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works, said the decision was made to ensure public safety and prevent financial losses.
The closure, which took effect at 7:10 p.m. on Sunday, will remain in place until further notice, Haqshenas said, citing limited visibility and hazardous conditions. All passenger and freight vehicles have been prohibited from traveling through the pass.
The Taliban-led Ministry of Public Works has urged citizens to avoid attempting the route until weather conditions improve.
The Salang Pass is one of Afghanistan’s most crucial transportation links, connecting Kabul with nine northern provinces.
