Taliban carried out public floggings of 12 people, including one woman, in the provinces of Kapisa and Uruzgan, accusing them of crimes such as theft and fleeing home without permission, according to the Taliban’s Supreme Court.
In separate statements, the Taliban-controlled judiciary said each person received 30 lashes and was sentenced to prison terms ranging from seven months to two years.
The floggings, the statements added, were carried out following approval from the Taliban’s Supreme Court.
Since early January, the Taliban have publicly flogged at least 50 people—including 10 women—across multiple provinces, citing various offenses.
The increase in corporal punishment has drawn sharp condemnation from international human rights organizations, including the United Nations, which has called for an immediate end to public floggings under Taliban rule.
