SEOUL — President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea attended a hearing on Tuesday at the Constitutional Court, where justices are weighing whether to uphold his impeachment and permanently remove him from office.
Mr. Yoon, who was impeached and suspended from power on Dec. 14, has been in custody since last week as investigators examine his attempt to impose martial law on Dec. 3—a move that stunned the nation before being swiftly overturned by Parliament.
The president and his legal team have argued that he never intended to fully implement martial law, insisting that it was meant only as a warning amid a deepening political crisis.
The Constitutional Court has up to 180 days to decide whether to reinstate Mr. Yoon or formally oust him from office, a ruling that could reshape the country’s political landscape.
