Kabul Serena Hotel operations handed over to Taliban-controlled corporation

KABUL— After nearly two decades of service as a landmark in Afghanistan’s hospitality industry, the Kabul Serena Hotel has announced that it will cease operations on February 1, 2025, transferring management to the Hotel State Owned Corporation (HSOC), an entity operated by the Taliban.

The announcement, made in a public statement by the hotel, marks the end of an era for the Kabul Serena Hotel, which has hosted international guests, diplomats, and state delegations since opening its doors in 2005. As part of the Serena Hotels group, the Kabul property was celebrated for setting global standards in hospitality and for contributing significantly to Afghanistan’s economy.

The statement highlighted the hotel’s role in fostering economic opportunities and professional growth, including the training of thousands of Afghan citizens in the hospitality sector. It further noted that the hotel has been a pioneer in empowering women through employment and supporting sustainable economic development in the country.

Starting February 1, all operational matters will be managed by HSOC, and guests are directed to contact the state-owned corporation for further inquiries.

In its farewell statement, the Kabul Serena Hotel management expressed gratitude to its guests, partners, and staff, acknowledging their role in the hotel’s success. “Our dedicated team members have been instrumental in making Kabul Serena Hotel a symbol of true hospitality and impeccable service,” the statement read.

While Kabul Serena Hotel will no longer operate, the Serena Hotels group said it remains active in 33 destinations across nine countries, inviting guests to continue experiencing its traditional hospitality and exceptional services elsewhere.
