KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban lashed a man and a woman in the central province of Kapisa on Thursday on charges of adultery and theft in the latest instance of public corporal punishment under their rule.

In a statement, the Taliban’s Supreme Court said the two were sentenced to six months in prison and between 22 and 39 lashes, with the punishment carried out in front of onlookers.

Over the past month, Taliban have flogged at least 35 people, including seven women, in various provinces on charges ranging from theft to so-called moral crimes.

Human rights organizations, including the United Nations, have strongly condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment and called for an immediate end to public floggings.

Amnesty International has also raised concerns over the lack of due process and legal protections for detainees under Taliban rule.
