TEHRAN — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that regional and international developments make it essential for Iran to engage closely with the Taliban.
“Afghanistan is an important neighbor for Iran, and the two countries share many national interests,” Araghchi said, according to Iranian media reports.
During a recent visit to Kabul, Araghchi discussed the return of undocumented Afghan migrants from Iran. He said Taliban officials had agreed to facilitate their repatriation but insisted that it be done through a structured plan.
He also addressed Iran’s long-standing dispute with Afghanistan over water rights from the Helmand River, saying the Taliban acknowledged Iran’s claims and emphasized the importance of their own water rights.
