Iran’s diplomatic mission in Kabul announced that Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, arrived in the Afghan capital early Sunday morning, leading a political and economic delegation.
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said the visit aims to foster “engagement and address shared interests and concerns.”
Baghaei described the trip as part of Iran’s “neighborhood policy” and emphasized its alignment with the ministry’s primary mission of safeguarding the nation’s interests.
“This visit could mark a turning point in leveraging the deep connections between the two nations to secure mutual benefits for both countries,” Baghaei said.
While Baghaei did not elaborate on the “interests and concerns,” longstanding issues between the two countries include Iran’s water rights from the Helmand River, terrorism, drug trafficking, and migration—topics frequently cited by Iranian officials in discussions with Afghanistan, now governed by the Taliban.
