UN agency says ‘no child should have to choose between food and education’

On the occasion of International Education Day, the World Food Program (WFP) has emphasized that no child should ever be forced to choose between food and education.

In a post on X on Friday, the WFP highlighted its efforts to provide nutritious meals to more than 700,000 students in Afghanistan.

These meals, the organization stated, help students “focus, learn, and build a bright future they deserve.”

International Education Day, observed annually on January 24, underscores the importance of education in fostering peace and development. However, this year’s observance comes amid Afghanistan’s ongoing educational crisis. According to the United Nations, it has been 1,225 days—nearly four years—since the Taliban imposed a ban preventing girls above the sixth grade from attending school.

Roza Otunbayeva, the U.N. Secretary-General’s special representative for Afghanistan, has called the ban “a tragedy,” underscoring the profound impact of the restrictions on Afghan girls and their futures.
