A Taliban judicial delegation visiting Iran on Monday, January 20, held talks with Iranian officials, including Ali Akbar Pourjamshidian, the deputy minister for security and law enforcement at Iran’s Ministry of Interior.
According to the state-run IRNA news agency, discussions focused on coordinated efforts to combat terrorism, drug trafficking, and human trafficking in the region.
Pourjamshidian emphasized the importance of collaboration on several key issues, including combating organized crime, improving judicial cooperation, extraditing criminals, addressing the concerns of Afghan citizens living in Iran, and managing the shared border between the two countries.
He also highlighted the shared religious and cultural ties between Iran and Afghanistan, noting the long history of bilateral interactions. “We hope the presence of this judicial delegation will help strengthen the relationship between the two nations in various areas,” Pourjamshidian said.
During the meeting, Pourjamshidian proposed the establishment of a direct communication channel between the intelligence, security, and law enforcement agencies of the two nations. He suggested this would be instrumental in enhancing bilateral relations and addressing mutual concerns.
The Taliban delegation, led by Abdul Malik Haqqani, the administrative deputy of the Taliban’s Supreme Court, described the creation of a direct channel as the most effective way to address shared legal and judicial issues. These include matters concerning Afghan citizens in Iran, border challenges, and efforts to combat terrorism and transnational organized crime.
The Taliban stated that the delegation’s visit was also aimed at exploring alternatives to the execution of Afghan nationals in Iran, a contentious issue between the two countries.
