KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, on Saturday called for increased humanitarian assistance during a meeting in Kabul with Alexander Matheou, the head of the Asia-Pacific region for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), according to a statement from the Taliban-run foreign ministry.
Muttaqi emphasized the importance of directing aid to Afghanistan’s remote regions and urged the expansion of healthcare services, particularly for children with congenital heart conditions. He also encouraged the IFRC to strengthen its healthcare and relief infrastructure across the country’s provinces.
During the meeting, both sides stressed the need for enhanced humanitarian cooperation, especially in funding and equipping Afghanistan’s strained healthcare sector.
The IFRC representative reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the Afghan people, though the organization has not yet released an official statement about the meeting.
Taliban have called for increased international aid to address Afghanistan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, which has been exacerbated by widespread poverty, limited access to healthcare, and harsh winter conditions.
