Four children treated for deformities at Kabul hospital

KABUL, Afghanistan — Four children suffering from congenital and acquired deformities have been successfully treated at Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital in Kabul, the hospital announced.

In a statement, the hospital said the children underwent successful surgeries to address their conditions. They had been referred to the hospital by a nonprofit organization called “Services for Our Future Children.”

Statistics indicate that between 2,000 and 3,000 children are born with deformities or disabilities in Afghanistan each year.

Medical experts attribute the high prevalence of these conditions to several factors, including the widespread practice of consanguineous (close-relative) marriages, which increases the risk of genetic disorders.

Additional contributing factors include Afghanistan’s difficult social and economic conditions, inadequate maternal nutrition during pregnancy, environmental pollution, and a lack of attention to maternal health.
