The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Monday that Switzerland has contributed $2.6 million in aid to Afghanistan.
In a post on the social media platform X, OCHA stated that the funds were directed to the U.N. humanitarian fund for Afghanistan and will be used to address critical needs.
“This support has the potential to create a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people in the country,” OCHA said.
The announcement comes as OCHA reports that 22.9 million people—more than half of Afghanistan’s population—will require humanitarian assistance to survive in the next calendar year.
At the same time, the organization has highlighted ongoing challenges in Afghanistan, including acute food insecurity and severe shortages in water, healthcare, and sanitation services. These crises have contributed to rising rates of malnutrition across the country.
OCHA also noted that Afghanistan’s economic conditions remain dire, with the economy shrinking by one-third since the Taliban’s takeover. Budget constraints, widespread unemployment, household debt, and pervasive poverty have further deepened the economic crisis, leaving millions struggling to make ends meet.
