The body of Monisa Hamdam Qarizada, an Afghan journalist and founder of Hamdam magazine, was laid to rest in Faryab province on Saturday, according to the Afghanistan Journalists Center.
Qarizada, 25, died on Friday in a hospital in Pakistan, where she had been receiving medical treatment for an unspecified illness. She had been transferred to Pakistan two weeks earlier, the center said.
Born in 2000 in Maimana, the capital of Faryab, Qarizada completed her primary education at Setareh High School before graduating from the Faculty of Sharia. In 2017, she founded Hamdam, a monthly magazine dedicated to women’s issues.
Her work as a journalist and publisher earned her recognition as a member of the National Union of Journalists in Faryab province.
After the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Qarizada’s magazine ceased operations for a time but resumed publication in November 2023, underscoring her commitment to amplifying women’s voices despite significant challenges.
The Afghanistan Journalists Center called her death “a great loss” to Afghanistan’s media and cultural community, mourning the untimely passing of a journalist who had made significant contributions to the country’s press.
