KABUL, Afghanistan — The United Nations Humanitarian Fund for Afghanistan announced that Luxembourg has contributed $1.56 million to support essential services and livelihoods in the country, where millions face dire conditions.

In a post on X, the fund said the contribution brings hope to families and communities in Afghanistan grappling with severe challenges. The funds will be allocated to areas such as basic services, livelihoods, and community resilience, according to the organization.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recently reported that in the coming year, 22.9 million people—more than half of Afghanistan’s population—will require humanitarian assistance to survive.

The agency warned that acute food insecurity, coupled with shortages in water, sanitation, and healthcare services, is driving up malnutrition rates across the country. According to OCHA, 3.5 million children under the age of five and 1.1 million women will require immediate nutritional treatment in the year ahead.

OCHA also highlighted the severe economic challenges facing Afghanistan. Since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021, the country’s economy has contracted by one-third. Budget constraints, widespread unemployment, household debt, and pervasive poverty have further compounded the humanitarian crisis.

“The economic conditions have become alarmingly dire,” the report stated, underscoring the urgent need for international assistance to address both immediate and long-term challenges.
