Afghanistan welcomed one of its first newborns of 2025 early on New Year’s Day.
A baby girl named Shabana was born just six minutes into the new year, at 12:06 a.m., at an MSF, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders), maternity hospital in the southeastern province of Khost.
While Shabana may not be the first baby born nationwide this year, she holds the distinction of being the first child delivered at an MSF facility in Afghanistan in 2025.
Médecins Sans Frontières expressed joy over the milestone, confirming that both the mother and the newborn are in good health.
“This moment, coinciding with the start of the new year, brings fresh hope to Shabana’s family and to the people of Afghanistan,” the organization said in a statement.
